"How do they work?" Theros asks without ceremony. "Well it's rather complicated and I'm not sure I should get into it with an introductory course....but mathematics works because there are natural patterns in the world - things we cannot even seen, but which can be described by numbers. Take this triangle for instance! For it to be a triangle it has to have three sides and three angles - it's in the definition. For all triangles, however, the angles must add up to be 180°. Likewise a square has four perfectly even sides and a circle no sides at all. Now nothing in life is truly perfect, which is why this is all imaginary. A circle for instance is the epitome of perfection in that we imagine it's shape whereas it is truly a bunch of small interconnected lines, but the degree and angle at which they change is so minute as to be undetectable with the naked eye. This is why we assume it to be perfect! May I digress a bit? It's like the conduction of limits in calculus - you'll get there eventually." She spews all of that out at once and begins to draw a graph to demonstrate the infinite nature of limits, forgetting about geometry.

Lan looks so lost and stares at the teacher in slight confusion and shock. Oh my Lord... Save me from this.

Theros looks like he's about to sneak off but remembers not getting in trouble (perception 2 will 2), and stays. During the long explanation he falls asleep.

Everyone looks horribly lost, except for one kid in the front watching intently though not taking notes. He just watches seeming fascinated by the detail.

"Anyways, here's some triangles. Let's talk about angles now - acute versus obtuse and right angles. Does anyone know about right angles???" She doesn't even notice Theros is asleep.

Lan sinks lower in his chair. He knew this was a simple answer but for the life of him he couldn't remember. "Right angles have 90 degrees! Two lines perpendicular to one another. Perpendicular means lines that make a 'T'. They run into each other. Parallel lines run next to each other but can never touch. You there - the awake one...oh geez, my family always said to keep up with these things..." She taps her temple. "Ah! Yes! Rellaria - Prince....Lana? Lan? How many infinite lines can a parallel line have? Answer quickly now."

"Now - copy down these formulas and triangles. I have to run to my other class - everyone be awake when I get back!"
She grabs a book and rushes out of the room.

Lan looks a lot more confused but starts scribbling down what she has on the board. This school was awful. He expected better.

Lan looks a lot more confused but starts scribbling down what she has on the board. This school was awful. He expected better. It's another fifteen minutes or so when Vita rushes back in and slams the book down loudly.
"Okay - any questions so far? None? Good." She erases the board, not bothering to ask if everyone has it down yet or not. She then spends five minutes writing out at least fifty problems on the board involving drawing shapes, adding angles, and so forth. "So your first exam will be next week. It will cover all topics from today. These are your homework problems. Write them quickly."

"I hope you are all as equally excited to learn about mathematics and physics as I am. Physics is a bit more fun I confess - we can break out sledge hammers and make explosions - but this will have to do for now. No point running when you cannot even walk. That said, these problems are designed to stretch you. For instance...I'm erasing the first one - every one have it down? Good. Gone! Here's another triangle - one angle is 20 degrees the next 60 degrees and the last we have labeled as 'x'. 'X' is our unknown value. Now we know all angles have to add up to 180 in order for it to be a triangle, no? So this means that 20 plus 60 plus x must equal 180. Follow so far? Good. I think that's enough of a start for you to do most of the work. I have an office somewhere if you need help, but no office hours - it's come and go as you please. Now you are free to go on to your next class! I know it's a bit early - but I have to run back to natural laws! Have a lovely geometric day!"
