Year 862, 8th month, 25th day, 4:00PMish.
Eleni and Aryteneus
"Hello Aryteneus. What are you doing here?"
"Just finished class! You?
"Well about the same. I mean in the girl's dorms."
"Oh I was walking Tellia back."
"Oh." She smiles then. "You are most welcome to join us."
"Where are you going?"
She shrugs "Nowhere really"
"Ah okay. How were classes?" He plops down at the table with them.
"They were... boring, mostly."
"Oh? Mine too. The dueling teacher was a bit annoyed with me I think."
"Why's that?"
"Because I thought it was stupid how the rules were set up."
"Ah. they're doing the fake dueling again?"
"It's a bit ridiculous really."
"It's a cultural thing best if you just play along and beat them at their own game."
"You think?"
"Yes definitely."
"Hmmm...it might be a fun enough game." He muses, thinking about the rules back home. "Do you miss home Eleni? Or does one end up liking it here?"
"I don't mind it. But yes I do miss home."
They both half smile at each other.
"I'm ready to go already. Although the tower was pretty cool. There were all these jars with creatures and a giant suit of armor!" He motions with his hands excitedly.
"You went into the tower?!"
He nods, looking proud.
"I told you it was off limits!"
"Well yeah..." He pouts.
"Did you get caught?"
"Yes." He sighs, hanging his head.
"Aryteneus that's going to look bad on the empire!"
He blinks and then looks worried. "You think? We didn't really do anything though!"
"Still getting caught breaking rules is unbecoming of one of us. You have to set an example for the others."
He makes a face. "I didn't think of it like that..."
"You particularly."
He huffs. "I should be able to do what I want."
"Can uncle Lucius just do whatever he wants?"
"He can."
"He has to do what's best for the empire."
He frowns, "So...?"
"He'd put on the best image he could." She crosses her arms.
"I didn't think I put on a bad image." He says defensively.
"You do if you break the rules and get caught"
"So just don't get caught?"
"Well yes, but don't go around breaking rules!"
"Fine mom." He says with an eye roll that he has been perfecting over the last twenty-four hours.
"Don't give me that." She says "You have to be responsible now. You represent all of us since you are the closest to the emperor."
He huffs and crosses his arms, "And you think I'm a poor representation?"
"No not a poor one. You are rather clever but you are a bit too brash sometimes it seems."
He frowns, digesting the information. "I was just being honest. I fail to see it as rude."
"Sometimes people don't like hearing the truth."
"So I shouldn't tell them?" His eyes narrow. "You would have me act like that Rellarian Prince - groveling before everyone?"
"You don't have to grovel. Just play along. It's much more impacting if they see you beating them at their own game."
"Why's that?" He continues argumentatively.
"Think about it."
He frowns, pouting a bit. "Fine...I'll try..."
"Tell me if you come to a conclusion." She says.
"No...I think you're right. I shouldn't let what they say bother me...so I shouldn't be as argumentative. But they are wrong."
"They are." She agrees.
He seems placated that she at least agrees on that and decides the issue is settled. Moving on. "Tellia and I want to start a proper dueling club if you'd like to join."
"Proper dueling? It sounds awfully competitive for me."
"I'm sure you'd do well. It's suppose to be for learning, not competing."
"I mean maybe. I could ask around to get some people to join too"
"That would be great!
She grins "I know a lot of people who would like an idea like that."
"It will be fun and beneficial."
"I agree." Eleni smiles.
"So what are you going to do for the rest of the day?"
"Well I'm supposed to meet with that Prince Lan later..." She frowns a little.
"With Lan? That will be nice I guess. He's pleasant enough."
"I guess. He's a bit odd, but he did seem interesting."
"How so?"
She shrugs. "Not sure yet"
"You have to have some justification for why he's odd." He mutters, but shrugs it off.
"Oh. I don't know I just can't quite figure him out."
"Maybe there's nothing to figure out?"
"What do you mean?"
"Maybe he's not that complicated."
"Perhaps." she agrees
"You like figuring people out?" He taps the table a bit impatiently.
She shrugs "I enjoy talking."
"What else?" She never did tell him exactly earlier.
"What else do I like?"
"Yes." Was she daft? It was a direct question.
"Well I like the empire, I like music."
"Music? Do you sing?" He perks up immediately.
"Sometimes.... I prefer the flute."
"Oh...I was going to say I could play and you sing something. Maybe we can perform a duet? You with the flute?"
"What do you play?"
"Harp!"
"Wonderful! I'd be happy to sing or play with you."
He looks quite happy. "Do they ever put on concerts here?
"On occasion sometimes the students play of each other. Sometimes Brin plays too"
"Really? What does he play?
"The Harp too I think."
He raises a brow, surprised.
"And the fiddle I think." She adds.
"Is he any good?"
"Yeah he seemed to be pretty good."
"Hmm...do they have any music classes here Eleni?"
"Not anymore. I heard they used to"
"Oh...shame. Wonder why they stopped..."
"Said they didn't have enough teachers and not enough students were interested."
He pouts a bit but doesn't say more there. They pretty much conclude the conversation and Ary goes off to find Dierus and Rufius.
