(Scroll down to next red mark for the actual drama)
Bran is chatting with some older boys and cracking up at some jokes.
Burn and Theros are trying to climb up to the crystal chandeliers.
Lan is tucked away in a corner, reading a large book and sipping on whatever drink they had.
"I can't get my fingers to say on them and hold my weight!" Theros says
"Maybe you should try weighing less!" Burn encourages.
"What are you two up too?" Bran walks over after a bit, looking amused.
"Climbing!"
"Well I for one want to get one of those crystals from the hangy ceiling thingy!"
"Professors will be mad if they catch you." He shakes his head. "Those things are expensive - be careful."
"Oh professors are mad about everything!"
"No kidding - there's rules for everything here. Just how it is down south I guess. You'd have better luck trying to steal one of those crystals from an imperial though. The ones on the chandelier are pretty well fastened."
She gets a mischievous smirk. "Would I now?"
"Yeah not to give you crazy ideas." He crosses his arms and glances at Theros. "How you feeling Sharkbait?"
"I feel great!" He drops to the ground and stands arms akimbo.
Bran offers Theros the shark tooth necklace he made.
"Woooaaah!" His eyes light up and he takes it reverently and puts it on. "Hey Lan! Look what Bran made from the shark that I punched!!!"
Lan glances up from his book and blinks, trying to focus. He eventually smiles. "I'm jealous."
"We shall make you one too once you slay a shark." He playfully slugs Theros in the shoulder.
Lan frowns at that and glances back down to his book. "Doubtful, sir."
Burn ignores Lan and continues to look at the chandalier.
"So what else have you guys been up to? Liking classes?
Lan snorts in response but doesn't give a real answer.
"Not really, everyone expects that you know how to read!"
"I got bored! You hafta sit still! Maybe if we toss a rope over..." Theros looks at the crystals.
"Well if you need help there's a few professors who don't mind. I could just lift you Theros and you hold burn?
Lan glances up then a brow risen at Bran.
"That's a great idea! One sec!" She throws off the dress she's wearing revealing the burnt remains of her former outfit. "Ready to climb!"
"What happened to your clothes?"
"Are you going to tell a teacher?" She asks.
"Me? Nah."
Theros looks like he thinks climbing is a great idea! "You can trust Bran!"
Lan goes back to reading, not wanting to be a part of that mess.
"Lan - come help me support Theros."
"I won't be much of a support, sir." Turns a page.
"Well go on and tell me the story Burn." Bran says after Burn crosses her arms and looks away.
She perks up a bit. "Well a few nights ago I snuck out to the graveyard to practice magic. I was doing pretty well too but I saw this weird skeleton and then this disembodied hand grabbed my ankle and and so of course I defended myself! Unfortunately that meant burning myself as well as the dead hand... heh."
"You did what?" He looks generally surprised and concerned.
"Sure you can be a support Lan! It's always safer to stand on two people!" Theros adds
She sighs. "I climbed over the wall and went to the Graveyard to practice magic and I saw a bunch of dead things moving one of which grabbed me. Then I burnt to a crisp."
"I have no strength for it, Theros..." Lan shuts his book loudly before placing it down with his glass. He walks over to "support".
"That's amazing. You could have been hurt...Have you told any teachers?"
"So I could get in trouble again? No thank you!"
He lets out a sigh.
"No kidding. You should be careful. Sounds like dark magic."
"I know! That's why we're going to find whoever is doing it and smash em! Right Theros?!"
"Yeah! I wanna find them! Why smash them though? Maybe they're nice!"
"Would a nice person make a weird dead tattooed bird that attacks people?
"Maybe whoever it is is responsible for what happened to the headmaster?"
"Woah! Maybe!" Theros looks like he thinks that would be awesome
"So we'll question him and THEN smash him." Burn says.
"Heroes of the school." He laughs. "You really should just tell a professor - let them handle it."
If Burn was a balloon, she just deflated.
"Not that you can't try to help...I'm just saying. It sounds serious...." Bran frowns.
"Im not afraid of a challenge, besides i dont see a way to tell a teacher without getting in trouble myself..."
"So what are you going to do then? Sneak back to the graveyard?"
Lan rolls his eyes and Theros' eyes light up.
"As a matter of fact I will." She huffs giving Lan a short glare before looking away.
He just rolls his eyes again.
"When? Perhaps I can come too?" Bran adds.
Lan looks at bran and gives a disapproving/surprised look.
"Yeah! You could be a really great graveyard companion too!"
Bran looks at Lan and smiles.
"What? You got to live a little."
He snorts. "You should tell a teacher. There are rules to follow." He quotes
"Well I can tell a teacher if you two are afraid of getting in trouble. Maybe Poisson?"
"Who said I would be joining you?"
(Let the drama begin)
"Let him stay here while us 'bottoms' get stuff done." Burn says.
"Oh don't you start." Lan gives her a look.
"Oh sorry! I forget how unworthy I am to talk to you!"
Theros looks uncomfortable and annoyed at the social class jabs.
"Now you're putting words in my mouth. When have I said that you're unworthy?"
Her eyes narrow. "I must be. To you, to Aryteneus, to nearly every damn noble in this whole fucking school."
"I'm so sorry, my lady. It must be so hard having a life you can live out how you see fit. Ever think maybe we are jealous of you? Huh?"
"Oh yea, I get to do whatever I want! Maybe I'll push out a baby in the kitchen, or maybe it'll be in the field? I will be working that until the day I die after all!"
"Both of you knock it off." Bran shakes his head. "Don't we have bigger problems?"
Lan shuts up, tears burning in his eyes. "If you consider doing stupid things." He walks back to his seat and goes back to reading, rubbing his eyes
Burn's shaking and can hear the voice screaming in her head.
Bran puts a hand on her shoulder. "You're not trash, okay?"
"I know I'm not, I don't care what any of those nobles say." She looks up and gives an appreciative smile.
"Only your own opinion matters anyways you know. Don't let them get to you." He glances over at Lan. "And Lan - same for you too you know. You're worth something."
Lan glares up at all of them. "I'm sick of people telling me who or what I am when no one knows me." He gets up and storms off.
Bran grabs him by the wrist before he can run off. "How do you expect anyone to get to know you when all you do is cry and run from your problems, Prince?"
"That's my life! I run and cry! Just leave me alone!"
"Do you even hear yourself?"
"Leave me alone... Theros and Burn want your attention. I've already ruined their fun."
"You're seriously making me want to punch you. Lan - we're trying to include you. Get off your high horse and join us. Have some fun and live a little."
"How can I have fun when this... This bi- girl keeps glaring at me for something I meant no offense to?"
"Uh - let it go? Learn to forgive? Be the better person? Slug it out and see who wins? Hell if I care - just if you whine and storm off when something doesn't go your way you give the impression of being a spoiled brat."
"Just leave me alone, Bran... I'll remember never to come around when she's there..."
"... go on Lan, finish what you were going to say. Call me a bitch, please. Because you know what you are? A hypocrite. But I cant expect you to care about my feelings if you don't want something out of me. "
Lan jerks free, glaring at her. "I don't need crazy. I already have enough in my life."
"Ladies please - this fighting is really stupid and petty. It's been like what? Two days since you arrived."
Lan just shakes his head and continues to leave
"I thought you were my friend..."
"Yeah! Let's just talk or do something! Maybe you could tell us about your life..." Theros adds.
"Yeah - we could play this game we do back up north?" Bran suggests.
Lan storms off.
"All nobles are the same." Burn says.
"That's like saying all peasants are the same."
She scuffs her foot on the ground, unsure of how to respond to that.
"It's the same mentality. Maybe you and Lan are more similar than you think."
"No I'm not! "
"I hear you shoved my roommate because you were mad at him?"
"Whu- he's you're roommate?! Well I'll have you know, he said to my friend over first. So hard that he knocked his head on the ground. But nobody pays attention to that of course. He refused to apologize so gave him a taste of his own medicine."
"I don't doubt it. Dierus is a piece of work honestly. All I'm saying is both you and Lan respond to things badly and don't stop to consider the other person's viewpoint."
She crosses her arms. "So I'm just supposed to let uppity assholes walk all over me? What does that solve?"
"Do you want the advice I gave Lan?"
"What?"
"Talk less. Smile more."
She pauses unsure of what to say.
"Sounds like something my grandma would say!" Theros says as a compliment
"You fighting everyone just creates more animosity and enemies, Burn. Bide your time. Pick your fights more wisely. As soon as you respond angrily, you lose control of the situation. Try to imagine what the other person is going through."
"What if you can't imagine?"
"Then that's okay - at least you tried. But it helps to understand why someone is acting the way they are and let's you respond better. It helps you make friends."
"Well it seems to late for that with him, he refuses to see my side and I can't see his because he doesn't tell anyone anything."
"Burn - he's scared out of his mind. He's probably never been outside his palace, he has no friends here, and there's a tough little peasant girl that can beat him up. It's world shattering." He winks.
She grins "Darn right I can!" She thinks for a moment. "Well that's even more reason for him to go out with us to the graveyard, if he'll ever talk to me again that is."
"Maybe if we make friends with him first, he'll come!"
"I'm sure he will if you want him to. It's like capturing a deer, Burn. You'll have to be gentle. He's been hurt by those closest to him." He stretches. "Anyways - maybe we can still play a game later or something. Back home we sit around a campfire and tell stories and secrets."
"yea I like that idea! We would do that too sometimes on Caus."
"Yeah! That sounds great! How do you know he was hurt? How'd you get him to talk to you?"
He raises a brow, a bit surprised Theros doesn't remember what all was said during the shark attack.
"I talked less and waited. Like a deer."
"Wow! So how do you play these games?"
"Well we have to get a group and wait till midnight. You prick your finger and swear on your animal spirit or on your father's name that you will not repeat what is told in the circle. Then you take turns asking questions, telling a scary story, or completing a challenge."
"Secrets?"
"Yeah, or funny things about yourself. It's just a way to get to know each other really. Blood brothers."
"Oh boy!! What if I don't know my animal or my father?"
"You could swear by your cool sword! or your grandma?" Burn says.
"Yeah!"
"Exactly. You guys pick the people and the spot and let me know, ka?"
"You get Lan to come, deercharmer!"
"Yeah - sharkbait and I can get snacks?"
"Is that my name now?" She grins sheepishly. "I'll try..."
"Sure! I'll invite Ary too!" Theros says
