"So no..." He seems annoyed, but not at the kids. He sits down, readjusting his cloak and rubbing his wrists. "Where to begin...the Nightblades was established centuries ago in the Drakarian Empire, a counterbalance to the rampant debauchery and corruption perpetrated by the Archons in the generations following Drakas' rule. Magic is the blood of Imperials and all they care about. We were different than normal assassins though - the draw of money did not matter to our original members. They sought only to establish what would be necessary to curb the abuse of the mage lords there - to better society through the elimination of corrupt parts. Much as how a surgeon carefully cuts away dead tissue. I digress, but they established five basic tenets to guide their actions. Please tell me you know those...?" Sio quickly and without hesitation repeats the five tenets and three possible short interpretations for each one, as though from rote memory. "Congratulations - what do the tenets actually mean to you? There's little point parroting them."

"But they mean little to some of you?" He says without really wanting an answer. "Anyways...the original blades took on apprentice and so on and so forth. Masters were recognized by the daggers they carried and also their cloaks. We became our name, relinquished our own and our ties to the world....supposedly." Rose listens with extreme interest. "So... Are ya a masta? Lasky neva really said wha ya were besides be'n a... A... Um... Ar yadda badda." "I don't know what a yadda badda is." He says, looking lost. "And yes...there was a point where I earned my cloak and dagger."

"Congratulations - what do the tenets actually mean to you? There's little point parroting them." Viasio grins. A familiar routine. "Spill not an innocent's blood - Well, I try not to spill blood in general, ey? But I suppose it means do no harm to anyone who doesn't deserve it," He laughs mirthlessly at that, "Kill swiftly and mercifully. Hmm, you shouldn't cause pain if you don't need to, ei? Ei. Keep thy word sacred. This one... we have to lie sometimes to get what the Nightblades need, yes? Toen. I think it means don't break a promise that you mean. Do not betray the brotherhood..." Upon uttering this one he just looks angry for a moment, as if imagining someone betraying their master. "...I think that one is obvious. Honor life and respect death. The living are useful and powerful. The dead will never walk again. Toen, na ilia tesh veshvari se."

The laughing mirthlessly part gets a bit of an eyebrow raise.

"There was an upper council established of masters, followed by their students, followed by the novices. Now, it is usually not my place to tell you - you're not of a high enough rank...but as there are only us left I see little point in keeping it hidden. The council oversaw the contracts and every student mentor pairing. Arcas oversaw the council..." He frowns, tapping his knee. "Three years ago there was a coup of sorts. A blade by the name of Dorion broke off along with a few other council members. We were slaughtered. Tychon and I, along with your mentors, managed to flee here. Arcas was at the heat of the attack and he vanished. I suspect he was involved, but my perspective is biased."

"I'm not the best to ask. Yes. There was a divide in more recent years, especially in policies regarding the tenets. Many were becoming less reluctant to discipline their students, and I know Dorion was intimately involved in recruiting less than ideal candidates - that is to say, individuals who were interested in how much blood they could shed rather than how much good they could produce. It was a subtle change in values. It's really all speculation on my part though."
