Well to the three who rush off, you first notice a dagger driven into the tree. There's a bloody mass hanging from it and a note.
The pattern would seem too obvious to you Virgil. There are obvious stirrings of the dirt and the blood is well dried (probably done hours ago). You would take note that there is a trail leading down towards the lake, and you find a torn piece of cloth that has some blood drops.
